BURLINGTON--Manuela Anwander scored in the first extra round of the shootout to give Germany a 2-1 win over Slovakia in the first game of a best-of-three relegation series to determine which team qualifies for Ottawa and which team goes to Division I next year.
It was Anwander's second attempt. She had been stopped by Zuzana Tomcikova on the first shot of the shootout. The game had gone to sudden death shots because Jana Kapustova of Slovakia and Andrea Lanzl of Germany had each scored in the first three rounds.
Martina Velickova drew first blood in the game, scoring a power-play goal for the Slovaks just 5:31 into the opening period with Anwander off for interference.
Germany had the better of play the rest of the opening 20 minutes, but the usual excellent goaltending from Tomcikova sent the Slovaks to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.
Julia Zorn tied the game at 7:57 of the second period, and the rest of the game was tight checking, although Germany had the better of play.
